HHFC VISION PROJECT

As spelled out in the HOH Five Year Plan, voted in at the November 2007 gathering, HOH has definitive plans to get a building space of its own. This Vision Project is designed to make you aware of our goals so we may all help to do our part to make them a reality.

What we are thinking of is a rented space, preferably somewhere such as a strip center with cross foot traffic. This space would be shared with our fellow Houston Freethought Alliance member, the Houston Church of Freethought. Below is a description of what this building space will be, and after that an outline of how we plan to achieve it.

WHAT THE HHFC WILL BE

The Houston Humanist & Freethought Center will be a facility funded and operated jointly by HOH and HCoF. Its purpose will be to serve as a locale for most of our regular and special events and activities. Its purpose will also be to serve as a base of operations for helping to promote rational and ethical causes in the Houston-area and in the neighborhood of the building - a true base of operations for Humanism and freethought in Houston. Activities and events at the center will likely include the following:

HOH Main Monthly Gathering HCoF Services
Children's Education Program One of the HOH Regional Gatherings
HOH Ideas Club HOH Religion, Society, & Ethics Club
Other Clubs (Young Adults, Women's, Contemplatives; possible) Canned Goods Program
Free tutoring for neighborhood children. Free Art Classes.
Humanist Scholarship Award Humanistic Citizenship Award
Coffee Social/s Various rented uses for like-minded groups
One of the Atheist Meetup locations (possible) World Humanist Day Celebration
Winter Solstice Celebration Darwin Day Celebration

HOW WE PLAN TO ACHIEVE IT

HCoF is already in a position to fulfill their part of the financial and activity obligations for such a center. As for HOH, we must move toward being capable of funding our half of the obligation. This means we will need more members and more Patrons. There are two stages to our plan to reach the level needed.

Stage 1: Regional Gatherings
Along with new advertising and online outreach efforts, and along with efforts to form new activities of broad appeal to members, we will be creating several regional gatherings to take place simultaneously on the first Saturday of each month, in different locations throughout the Houston and surrounding areas. These new gatherings will be announced through the Humanist Magazine subscriber base, as well as many other places. They will make attending much more convenient for people in these areas and we expect to see increases in overall attendance and new contacts made.

The first step of stage 1 will be to call for volunteers. These volunteers would help to organize the gathering closest to where they live. Once we have such volunteers, the next step will be for them to find a suitable location near the geographic areas represented on the map below. This could be a community center, library room, rented room in a UU church, hotel club house, or some other facility that is either free or extremely cheap. The next step will be for the organizers to plan the program for the gathering. Meanwhile, HOH officers will assist the regional organizers with overall announcements and getting out the word.

Stage 2: Patron Drive
The next stage in the Vision Project will be a member and Patron drive. As of the end of 2007, we have recently increased greatly our number of contacts receiving announcements. This means, however, that only about 12% of our contacts are actual dues-paying members of HOH.

Each Patron increases our monthly intake, and substantially effects our annual budget. We have estimated that at least 40 Patrons will be needed in order to be at the level of revenue necessary to support our end of the center and begin realistically looking into details and properties.

As of November 26, 2007, the original posting date of this page, we had 10 Patrons - already 25% the way there.

We cannot achieve this without the support of people right here in Houston just like yourself. If you would like to learn more about the ways you can help make this vision a reality, please click here.
