A Long Tradition

The Humanists of Houston has a long tradition of partaking in an annual Winter Solstice Celebration. It has always been welcoming of all Humanists, atheists, agnostics, and other freethinkers regardless of their affiliation with the organization.

Of course, the culture we find ourselves in is in celebration during this period, which makes holding ours at the same time logistically sensible. Regardless, it makes sense to celebrate human compassion, friendship, and family periodically. It also makes sense to do this during the coldest part of the year, given that weather effects our mood! Furthermore, by attaching our celebration to the winter solstice, we follow a long tradition while signifying our appreciation of the natural universe. Many Humanists have also recently begun to refer to celebration during this period as HumanLight.

Everyone's Coming!
After the formation of the Houston Freethought Alliance in 1999, the HOH Winter Solstice Celebration became an Alliance-level event. We began working together with all of the other freethought organizations in the Houston area to host a gathering for our entire freethought community.

This year, HOH is working with the other Alliance organizations again, through a muti-organization Winter Solstice Committee. The Committee has been working hard to plan a wonderful event everyone is sure to enjoy, and YOU are invited!

Other Notes
Please bring hors d'oeuvres, veggies, fruit, or desert - or anything else others would enjoy (including wine, beer, etc.). Meat, soft drinks, and all utensils will be provided.

You do not have to obligate yourself to bring an item - we'll sort that out as we get closer to the event. There will be more details to follow in further announcements, but please mark your calendars and RSVP today!

Many thanks to everyone from the different organizations who served on the Winter Solstice Committee for organizing this event.

We hope to see YOU at our next celebration!
